Each federally recognized tribe was invited to send one representative to the Conference.
This will be the second White House Tribal Nations Conference for the Obama Administration, and continues to build upon the President's commitment to strengthen the nation to nation relationship with Indian Country.

Former Navajo Nation President Peter MacDonald has endorsed Barack Obama.
The Navajo Nation's highest-profile Republican is crossing party lines this year, unless the McCain-Palin ticket can convince him it has Native Americans at heart.
"I think the Navajos' only choice is to go with the Democratic ticket," former Navajo Nation President Peter MacDonald said in a telephone interview.
MacDonald said he's been a Republican for years, but he doesn't see any significant changes for the Navajo Nation if Republican Presidential nominee John McCain is elected.

More and more Native Alaskans are coming forward to tell about their direct experiences with Gov. Palin and her lack of regard for them. Here is a letter I received today that speaks for itself...
An Alaska Native's take on his Governor
By Matt Gilbert
Hello. My name is Matt Gilbert. I am originally from Arctic Village, Alaska. I am Alaska Native: Gwich'in Athabascan. I visited Sarah's campaign office and spoke with her before she became Governor. We talked about the hunting & fishing rights of Alaska Natives. We didn't get anywhere. She sided with sport & commercial interests, so I walked out on her and never looked back.

Via Deoliver47 on Daily Kos, Native Times is reporting that Billy Mills, a Lakota Sioux Olympic gold medalist born and raised on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation came out today in support of Barack Obama -- all the more notable because Mills is a Republican:
Mills, who won the 1964 Olympic gold in the 10,000-meter run in one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history, said that he was a lifelong Republican, but that he had been inspired by Obama's track record of uniting Americans from all walks of life. He also noted Obama's background as the son of a single, working mom and his youth in Hawaii and Indonesia as predictive of his ability to understand and work for people in underserved communities.
Mills rose to prominence at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo where he came in as a virtual unknown and stunned the world by surging forward from third place in the final lap to capture the gold medal. He has since been inducted into the U.S. Track and Field Hall of Fame and the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame.
The 1983 film "Running Brave" starred Robby Benson as a young Mills.
Mills concluded his endorsement by saying, "Barack Obama is the right choice for Indian Country and all of South Dakota."

With 4.5 million Native Americans in the U.S., both Clinton and Obama need the Native American vote in some key states, and are therefore courting votes.
A while back, I diaried their policy proposals. Both were good, but I found Obama's more comprehensive.
Now, Obama has come out with a proposal that puts him ahead of Clinton as far as I'm concerned. Yet one more reason I support him.

Cross-posted from the Daily Kos.
Even though I have a very strong personal opinion based on my position as an anti-war voter, I want to present both Obama's and Clinton's policy proposals on Native American issues.
I believe that Amnesty International did a lot through its report, United States of America: Maze of Injustice: The failure to protect indigenous women from violence, and follow-up work with State and National legislators to give these issues more national attention.
So, whomever you support right now, all of this is great news. Below I have blockquoted each set of proposals from the Clinton and Obama campaigns. They are long, but I wanted to give you the complete statements. I am just providing information here, not cheers or jeers for one or the other!
Update #1: I've been informed by an Obama supporter that I've left out some info, and am searching right now for more on his website. When I find it, I'll put the update below the fold.
Update #2Turns out I left out an extremely significant chunk of Obama's platform on Native American issues. Thanks so much to ivorybill and jennybravo for new links.
